Ep# 073: Mindset Coach Joe Trodden gets our entrepreneurial heads straight

This episode is very much for entrepreneurs who are struggling to grow their company. My guest is Joe Trodden, a mindset coach from the UK that helps founders grow beyond themselves by learning how to define their vision and empower the people around them to help everyone achieve it.

As an entrepreneur that’s leading a company and team, here’s one of the most powerful things you can say:

“Here’s the vision that I have, and here’s where we can be.”

It’s a hallmark of a visionary leader, but not every leader can clearly articulate their vision…if they even have one. That that’s a serious impediment to growth.

This one hits home for me. I’ve launched several companies and managed to grow them all to a certain point. And then…

…I’m lost as to how to grow them bigger. And one of the biggest reasons why is that I haven’t figured out how to fully integrate a comprehensive, clearly articulated vision. Without that, there’s no North Star guiding people.

Joe Trodden helps early entrepreneurs get into a proper growth mindset.

Joe says it’s critically important to set that vision and create the major milestones, then hire the people necessary to get there…and lean on them to help you figure out how.

As the leader, you don’t need to figure out all the steps necessary to accomplish that vision. You just need to be able to articulate the vision clearly and help your team understand why it’s important. The “why” is key to getting them to buy into your vision. If they believe in it, then they’ll want to actively participate in achieving that vision.

Key Takeaways

  • Your mindset isn’t some cliche saying on an inspirational poster…it’s really how you view the world.
  • The strategy piece is defining where you want to get to, outlining the narrative of the business, resource management, and what will take it to the next level. The mindset piece for the entrepreneur is how you’ll leverage your expertise and world view in order to achieve the strategy.
  • Clearly define your vision for the company or brand…people can’t read your mind
  • Hire people who share your vision, then empower and trust them to help you get there
  • Make sure that your vision and plan are able to be clearly communicated, and that each person understands their role in acheiving it.
  • Recognize that each person has their own reasons and goals for doing what they do, and incentive them accordingly

Joe says there are very few truly visionary entrepreneurs in the world. By being able to honestly define your vision and then step out of the way of the mechanics of achieving it, you open up opportunities for people to create the structures required to achieve it.

There’s a big difference between just saying that people should lead with vision, though, and actually knowing how to do it. Joe explains that the real key is understanding how to grow is understanding what your particular superpowers are, then focus on those and hire for the rest.
